About five years ago, Robert and I visited Three Hammers Winery in Hawley, PA, and tasted something we haven’t forgotten since. It was that good. Later on, when we learned that a bed and breakfast could offer wine from a small-batch winery, that memory came right back. We knew immediately which wine it needed to be. So we started making the drive — six hours round trip — to pick it up ourselves, whenever we needed to restock. We still do. That’s not the easy way to source wine for a bed and breakfast. But it’s the way that made sense to us. It was in late March that I woke up to the silence of a landscape transformed by a blanket of snow covering literally everything. The world was magical, dusted with glitter, and oh, so clean and crisp. Being a sun loving, beach town California girl, I never felt the need to make it up to the mountains in my youth. I would have had to compete with the bustling humanity to slide down a crowded hillside in the cold, and honestly, that did not appeal at the time. But 10 years of living in the beautiful Laurel Highlands of PA had shifted my paradigms to the point that I eagerly awaited the first snowfall of each year, and still get into a bit of a mourning period when it warms up in Spring. Anywhooo… That day in 2010, some kindred spirits decided to get my old bones out and into some XC Skis for the first time. In those days, I was pretty fit, and believed that I was capable of any activity that was laid out before me. Well, imagine my surprise when I was rudely awakened to my limitations, and had to be pulled out of the snowbanks more times than I could count that first time out. Thank goodness for strong young friends! I can’t remember having laughed so much over such a long period of time, and that was the reasoning I held on to for the following days of major muscle group aches… too much laughter. I spent the next week watching Youtube videos so I could save face on my subsequent trips to the nicely groomed trails at Laurel Hills State Park, Fort Necessity, and Forbes State Forest, to name a few. So for the beginners amongst anyone reading who might want to give Snowshoeing or XC Skiing a try, I am offering this wonderful Snow Shoeing link from the Laurel Highlands Visitors Center to help you get off on the right foot. HaHa. Maybe we will cross paths after I strap on some snowshoes and try to stay vertical. If you see an old woman, stuck in a snowbank laughing like a lunatic, please lend a hand. I woke up this morning (on a very rare day off!) to the smell off woodsmoke. It was a bit chilly, and the crickets were chirping, so I snuggled down and had visions of crisp leaves under my feet and sunlight filtering gently through gold and auburn leaves. Then I opened my eyes, saw the sun streaming through all that lush green of my maples, and realized that I had left the bedroom patio door open, and the dog had my covers. So much for my pumpkin filled fantasies! Autumn is my favorite time of year. Growing up in the central coast of California, autumn was a no show ~ an elusive phantom that I saw in movies, National Geographic, and descripted on the pages of my favorite vintage novels. October often still found me bodysurfing on the beach by Hobo’s Jungle, where the Ventura River meets the Pacific Ocean! The weather was in the high 60s to mid-70s, the view was green palm trees, coastal pines, and the sun baked Santa Inez Mountains. Although I arrived here in the Summer of 2000, Autumn in the Southern Laurel Highlands still takes my breath away. Vibrant leaves dancing down the road ahead of me on every drive from home, Amish farm stands overflowing with pumpkins and gourds of all hues shapes and sizes, crisp air and crunching leaves under the tires of my bike on the GAP Trail. And back at the B&B, Guests gathering around the fire ring to chat and get sticky toasting marshmallows from their Smore kits. There are so many things to do on the mountain come late September and October… Springs Folk Festival, Autumn Glory Festival, Mountain Craft Days are great places to get a jump on your Christmas list, and Fallingwater in full color is a marvel. The State parks are open, and the crowds have gone, so the trails are pristine and peaceful. Friendship Hill National Historic Site puts on a marvelous Fall Festival with historians in costume, musicians, and traditional craft demonstrations and vendors. And the view from Albert Gallitan’s overlook of the Mon River is stunning. Simply driving up to Mt Davis is a treat! Ah, well, today there are peaches to be harvested and tomatoes on the vines. And as we wait for the trees to don their cool weather wardrobe, we will relocate the fire ring to the clearing in the organic garden to the back of the property, getting ready for the Fall fire-ring marshmallow roasts. Last year we discovered that the Dogwood that shaded its fringes was a bit scorched! Come on up!
