Due to overwhelming concern for the safety of our guests, neighbors, families, and staff, Hartzell House is at this point accepting limited reservations for the 2021 season. We will reassess and update as the days go by. Please see below for detailed information of what we are doing to keep our guests, staff, and selves as safe and well as possible during these challenging times. If you currently have a reservation and would like to discuss concerns or explore options, we welcome your call.

We strive to keep the atmosphere quiet and cerebral, but have some great suggestions for family oriented inns in the area ~ just ask!

Hartzell House Bed & Breakfast was designed and created to offer discerning travelers a bit more upscale experience that we term, Casual Luxury. The inn offers more comforts and amenities than your usual provincial B&B, but omits the grandiosity of a local 5-star resort (although we are near enough for guests to take advantage of their great offerings!). As guardians of your precious leisure time, we strive to be discreet yet available. When you need us, you can generally find us in the kitchen, great room, or garden to answer your questions, help with itineraries, directions, and suggestions, or just chat ~ beginning at breakfast and up ’til about 9 each night.

As guests at Hartzell House Bed & Breakfast, a 10-year Tripadvisor “Property of Excellence,” you are welcome to be as engaged or as insulated as you desire. You may choose to dine intimately or make new connections in one of our many breakfast settings. There are cozy spots, indoors and out, in which to have intimate conversations, read, or nap, and several splendid spaces in which to socialize, or play pool, cards, or games. If you just can’t miss your favorite team or an episode of Jeopardy or The Crown, choose from one of three comfortable entertainment centers in which to hunker down and enjoy the show, or take your device up to your room and enjoy a movie in private. Additionally, the Artist and Angler suites of the East wing are outfitted with Smart TVs, so you can access your music, Netflix, etc. in the comfort of your room.

If you choose to call, please understand that the needs of our in-house guests always come first, and for our sanity and health, we do not answer the phone after 9:00 pm. We are generally tied up with breakfasts and check-out until about 11:00am, and return phone messages after that time.

Our Response to the Coronavirus Outbreak

We are committed to ensuring your stay is safe,  and your experience is secure and peaceful.


At Hartzell House, we want guests to feel confident that safety and comfort are at the forefront of our actions and intentions.

From the inception of the B&B in 2006, we have always made the health and well-being of our guests our number one priority, and find today that we need to be even more focused on that goal. So as a response to the threat of Covid-19, we instituted new policies for ourselves, our staff, and our guests, and a new cleaning and sanitizing protocol designed to greatly minimize the risk of infection within our sphere.

As of April 2020, we began following the recommendations of the CDC, and the WHO, and common sense procedures and practices to avoid the spread of Covid-19, protect our guests, neighbors, friends, and families, and support our brave healthcare workers.

In June 2020, we were the grateful recipients of a PA Lendistry Grant, which enabled us to purchase high quality hepa-filters for the common areas and guest rooms of the B&B, outdoor space heaters, and other safety improvements which will enable us to keep everyone safe and serve guests in the courtyard or the patios once the weather warms up a touch.

Behind the scenes, we have changed over to a duvet system to ensure all bedding may be more easily and thoroughly sanitized between guests, and amped up our already over the top cleaning and sanitizing protocol.

Once a guest room is vacated, all linens and reusable items are removed and sanitized, consumables are disposed of, and the room is sanitized with a 3.5%, food grade hydrogen peroxide and essential oil blend and allowed to dwell for 30 minutes. Then the room is the room is cleaned and made up by a member of our trained staff. Finally, the rooms are locked until a new guest takes occupancy. Key sets will be sprayed with isopropyl alcohol when they are turned in.

Our housekeeping staff has been individually trained to ensure that commonly touched surfaces are correctly sanitized every day, either with sanitizing cleaner or our 3.5%, food grade hydrogen peroxide and essential oil blend, adhering to proper dwell times. David or Kitty will be certain that the commonly touched surfaces are sanitized and safe when you come down for the day. These surfaces include but are not limited to doorbells, doorknobs, remotes, light switches, water taps and handles, cabinet and drawer handles, refrigerator handles, coffee and tea kettle handles, and countertops. Our table tops, chair backs and arms will be spray sanitized between guest seatings.

To ease your mind regarding food preparation and kitchen hygiene, both David and I have been ServeSafe Certified and our kitchen is commercially licensed. Behind closed doors is a Meiko Commercial Dishwasher that runs at 186 degrees to heat sanitize everything that goes into preparing and serving your meals at Hartzell House, and we always purchase our consumables from verified vendors for your protection.

We have also implemented new, reduced occupancy standards that allow for only two guests per room or suite.

We are gratefully complying with, and adapting to the changing PA laws requiring masks in all indoor common spaces of our business. If an unvaccinated guest arrives without a mask, disposable ones are available to allow entry. Stylish ones are available for purchase!

We are accepting Covid related reschedules at any time prior to check-in with no penalties.

We are only allowing registered guests, staff, and service technicians entrance to the B&B, and our staff must do temp readings before the start of each shift.

We require the respectful practice of social distancing, with a minimum of six feet between guests who are not of one party, our staff, and ourselves.

Hand sanitizer stations are available at all the entrances to the interior of Hartzell House, and pump bottles of hand sanitizer are at strategic points throughout the inn for guests use.

We are currently able to offer self-serve beverages. If you prefer not to use a common pot of coffee, please let us know, and we will deliver coffee to you. If you want something, and we’ve forgotten to offer it, just ask! We are happy to serve you.

We are sorry for the inconvenience, but we have temporarily discontinued daily housekeeping services in the guest rooms. We want to limit exposure for the sake of our guests and our staff safety. We will be happy to take your trash and deliver towels or supplies to your door. For guests with an extended stay of 3 or more nights, we will provide thorough housekeeping every third day upon request.

Our promise to you is to do everything in our power to maintain a safe and healthy environment in which you may relax, regenerate, and breathe easy.
