More Than Dinner, A Culinary Welcome at Hartzell House

a loaf of bread and different colored eggsWhen we began offering dinner at Hartzell House Bed & Breakfast, it was an extension of what we already loved doing — creating experiences that help our guests feel cared for. Food brings people together, and there’s something deeply satisfying about sitting down to a freshly made meal, prepared with intention and shared in good company.

The Heart Behind Our Dinners

Our dinner offerings change with the seasons, but our focus stays the same — fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared meals. Right now, guests are enjoying choices like grilled salmon, hand-cut New York strip, and chicken piccata, each one made to order with care and attention to detail.

We love crafting every part of the meal — from a bright, balanced salad built with organic ingredients and homemade dressings, to seasonal sides that bring out the best of local produce. We use organic extra virgin olive oil, local honey, and fresh eggs from our own hens, and we source ingredients from places we know and trust. We can also take requests for favorite dishes whenever possible — we love creating meals that reflect what our guests enjoy most.

A Taste of Pennsylvania — and the Spirit of Food Tourism

The Original Travel Food Tourism Guide describes a food tourist as someone who travels to experience a place through its food — to discover local flavors, traditions, and connections that tell a story of community and care.

That description feels close to home for us. Every meal we make reflects the values of this region: hospitality, quality, and authenticity. We serve wine for purchase from Three Hammers Winery, a small-batch Pennsylvania producer whose craftsmanship and attention to detail we deeply admire. It’s one of many local partnerships that help us share a real sense of place with our guests.

The guide also emphasizes that food tourism isn’t just about what’s on the plate, but how it’s sourced and shared. We couldn’t agree more. From the herbs we grow to the honey and eggs we collect, every ingredient tells a small part of the Hartzell House story.

Desserts, Coffee, and Signature Touches

Dessert at Hartzell House is always homemade and often features Tate Farms ingredients — like their wonderfully rich strawberry chocolate sauce, a guest favorite.

And of course, our signature Hartzell House Ginger Syrup is made from organic ginger and organic sugar, a bright and comforting flavor you can enjoy here or purchase to take home (we ship, too!).

We’re also proud of our coffee that we serve Mayorgaorganic beans, ground fresh, offered in both decaf and regular. We start brewing early for our early risers, and it’s always served with breakfast — or with dessert if you add dinner to your stay. For us, coffee is more than a beverage; it’s part of the experience of slowing down and savoring the moment.

Cooking with Care and Availability

Dinner is available by request and based on availability, as we want every meal to be a reflection of our highest quality. When we’re not available to cook, we’re happy to share recommendations for local restaurants that align with our same values — places we visit ourselves and trust to give our guests an excellent experience.

We also gladly accommodate dietary restrictions whenever possible. If you have preferences or allergies, let us know in advance — we’ll do our best to create a meal that meets your needs while maintaining the integrity and freshness of our food.

What We Value Most

Food is one of the most beautiful ways to experience a place. As Original Travel writes, “food tourism is about immersing yourself in the culture and community of a place through its food.”
That’s exactly what we hope to offer at Hartzell House — not just a meal, but a sense of belonging and connection.

Whether you’re savoring a fresh salad, a warm entrée, or a slice of homemade dessert with a cup of coffee, we want your meal to feel as special as your stay. With five-star reviews and the Travelers’ Choice Award once again this year, we’re grateful to share what we love and proud to serve the kind of food that reflects our care and our home.
