Closer to the Sky: The Story Behind Hartzell House

Some places you visit.
Some places you feel.

“I used to say I wanted to come to my own party.”

Now I do — every single day.

How It Started

It started as a thought.

Not a plan, not a business strategy — just a quiet realization that a bed and breakfast would be the perfect place to do everything I loved and actually call it work.

The gardening.
The decorating.
The gathering.

Creating spaces where people feel something good the moment they walk in.

These were never hobbies — they were just how I lived.

For years, Robert and I had long careers, commutes, and all the things you do because that’s what you do.

But at home, we were always creating.
Always hosting.
Always making something out of nothing.

When life opened up for a change, we didn’t go searching.

We were just poking around.

And then an ad appeared that sounded like everything we wanted.

We came.
We stayed.

And I knew.

The Feeling That Made Us Stay

We booked a stay to see if it felt right.

The first thing I noticed was how you feel closer to the sky here.

It had everything.
The feeling was there.

So we bought it.

It wasn’t without a mind struggle. Big leaps rarely are.

But it all worked out — the way things do when you’re moving toward something that was quietly meant for you.

That was four years ago.

Every year since, we’ve been making it more and more ours — bringing all of our past experiences, our love of creating and hosting, into every corner of this place.

What We Didn’t Expect

We never thought about the people part.

Honestly.

We thought about the space, the experience, the things we loved doing.

And then the guests arrived — and everything shifted.

Meeting different people every day has introduced us to things we never even knew were a thing.

New perspectives.
New ways of seeing.
Growth we didn’t go looking for.

Our past experiences weren’t just a blur of time — they were preparation.

And the people walking through our door keep showing us there’s always another side… always something new to learn.

We came here thinking we’d create something for others.

Turns out, the people have been creating something in us all along.

More Than a Stay

This is what Hartzell House is built on.

A real life, fully lived — poured into every detail.

Our 15 chickens supplying guests with fresh eggs every morning.

The care that goes into every space, every meal, every small thing that makes a stay feel like more than a stay.

It’s the difference between a place that performs hospitality…
and a place that actually lives it.

This place is for more than just a stay.

This year we’re welcoming whole house rentals — weddings, family gatherings, and intimate celebrations.

And if you teach something, lead a retreat, or gather a community around something meaningful — we want you to know this place exists for that too.

Hartzell House isn’t just a location you rent.

We become part of your experience — bringing the care, the creativity, and the elevated touches that make your people feel held from the moment they arrive.

If something in you is thinking —
this could be the place

trust that feeling.
