The Award-Winning Wine at Hartzell House

There’s a moment at Hartzell House that tends to happen without anyone planning it. Someone settles into a chair on the porch, pours a glass, and just… slows down. That moment matters to us. So does what’s in the glass.

About five years ago, Robert and I visited Three Hammers Winery in Hawley, PA, and tasted something we haven’t forgotten since. It was that good.

Later on, when we learned that a bed and breakfast could offer wine from a small-batch winery, that memory came right back. We knew immediately which wine it needed to be. So we started making the drive — six hours round trip — to pick it up ourselves, whenever we needed to restock. We still do.

That’s not the easy way to source wine for a bed and breakfast. But it’s the way that made sense to us. Quality and flavor aren’t negotiable when it comes to what we put on our table, and once we tasted what Rob and his team at Three Hammers Winery were making, nothing else measured up quite the same way.

The recent recognition:

Three Hammers’ Sauvignon Blanc and Swift Waters Bordeaux-Style White Blend both earned 91 points in the June/July 2026 issue of Wine Enthusiast — and the Swift Waters blend was named an Editor’s Choice. That’s the kind of distinction that puts a small Pennsylvania winery on the map next to the biggest names in the industry.

And it’s not a one-time thing. Back in December 2024, six more Three Hammers wines were rated between 88 and 91 points — a Chenin Blanc, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, GSM, Cuvée Red, and Syrah. This is a winery that shows up, vintage after vintage. It’s good to know the six-hour trip has been worth it all along.

Why it matters to us

We could tell you the wine is good. We’d rather you taste it.

What we remember from that first visit to Three Hammers is simple: it was wine worth sharing. That’s really the whole reason it’s on our table today — we wanted our guests to want to taste what we tasted, alongside the food we serve with the same care.

Next time you stay with us, ask about the Three Hammers wine we keep on hand. It’s a small way to bring that same experience to your table, alongside the food we serve with the same care. You’re tasting something we drove six hours for, because we believed it was worth it — and something that’s now been recognized well beyond Pennsylvania too.

We’re grateful for the relationship, and even more grateful we get to share it with you.

Update: two new arrivals

We just brought in two more Three Hammers wines for guests to enjoy: the Chenin Blanc (91 points, Wine Enthusiast) and the Semillon (90 points, Wine Enthusiast). Ask about them when you arrive — the list keeps getting better.
